Deck Cleaning & Staining Toronto
When, How, and What It Costs

The Toronto homeowner's complete deck maintenance guide. Timing, PSI, stain types, and costs.

Toronto's freeze-thaw winters are brutal on wood decks — 80+ cycles of expanding and contracting water in wood grain, plus road salt tracked from boots, UV bleaching in summer, and mould from our humid springs. If your deck looks grey, splintery, or green, it's not ruined — it just needs the right cleaning and maintenance at the right time.

The Toronto Deck Calendar

APR

Inspect + Clean

After last frost. Sweep, inspect for rot and loose boards. Pressure wash at 1,200-1,500 PSI (NEVER higher on wood). Let dry 48 hours.

MAY

Sand + Stain

After cleaning and drying. Sand splinters. Apply stain when forecast shows 48-72 hours dry weather above 10°C. Two coats.

JUN-SEP

Enjoy + Maintain

Sweep regularly. Clean spills immediately. Move planters monthly to prevent moisture traps. Trim overhanging branches.

OCT

Fall Prep

Remove furniture or cover. Clear all leaves (wet leaves stain wood permanently). Apply deck protector if stain is 2+ years old.

NOV-MAR

Winter Protection

Shovel snow with plastic shovel (never metal). Avoid salt on wood (use sand for traction). Don't chip ice — let it melt naturally.

Deck Materials — PSI and Cleaning Guide

Never exceed PSI limits on wood: Too much pressure fuzzes the wood grain — lifting soft wood fibres between hard grain lines. This creates a rough, splintery surface that's impossible to smooth without heavy sanding. The damage is visible as a "furry" texture that catches dirt and moisture. Stay at 1,200-1,500 PSI for softwoods (pine, cedar), use a 25° or 40° nozzle, maintain 12+ inches distance, and work WITH the grain (never across).

The "water test" for stain readiness: Sprinkle water on your deck. If it beads up — the existing stain/sealer is still working. If it soaks in within 30 seconds — it's time to restain. Do this test every April as part of your spring inspection. This simple test saves you from staining too early (waste) or too late (damage).
